How to Choose a Tube Frame Engine-Driven Welder
Tubeframe welder image
Engine-driven welders are typically used when electric power isn’t available. Many of these applications require welders that are easy to transport.  Compact tube frame welders with small gasoline engines are an ideal choice.

Learn what key features you should consider when selecting a tube frame welder for your welding and repair needs.

U.S. Olympic Bobsled Team Relies on Lincoln Electric
Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project Helps Elevate the United States to the Sport’s New World Leader

Bobsled image
The months leading up to the Winter Olympic Games have been a whirlwind of activity for the fabricators at Chassis Dynamics, Inc. of Oxford, Connecticut – the firm that designs, manufactures and tests the Bo-Dyn brand of bobsleds used by the U.S. Olympic teams.

An integral part of preparing the sleds is welding the chassis, suspension, steering and internal components. To do this, Chassis Dynamics uses a variety of Lincoln Electric welding equipment, including the Precision TIG® 275, the
POWER MIG® 255XT and the POWER MIG® 180C. The Lincoln Electric Company is the official welding sponsor of the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project, a nonprofit organization that raises funds for the design and manufacture of bobsleds used by the U.S. Olympic and World Cup teams.

"Bo-Dyn insists on the best equipment available for the production of these sleds," said Phil Kurze, president of the Bo-Dyn Bobsled Project. "When competing for a gold medal, the welds must withstand the high speeds and G-forces associated with the sport. We count on Lincoln Electric welding machines to give us top-rated performance."

New Excalibur® 10018-D2 MR Stick Electrodes
For Offshore Welding Applications

Offshore image
Lincoln Electric has introduced Excalibur® 10018-D2 MR low hydrogen stick electrode for all-position welding of a variety of carbon-manganese, chromium-molybdenum and low alloy steels typically found in offshore welding applications.

Excalibur® 10018-D2 MR meets NACE requirements for corrosion resistance necessary for offshore and subsea welding of pipe carrying H2S or "sour gas." It is also an excellent choice for welding chromium-molybdenum steels including AISI 4130, 4140 and 8630, as well as ASTM A182 and A336 Grades F22.

Customer Loves Panther™ Push-Pull Gun

Panther Push-Pull Gun image

Drake Dimitry of Heights Tower Systems sent us these comments on the Panther™ Push-Pull Gun:

"The position of the speed setting dial out of the way of the welder's thumb is an immediate noticeable improvement!

"My welder likes how the Panther™ push-pull gun welds. It is more consistent than our previous model.  I have not personally welded with it too much, mainly my welder has, but when I have I greatly enjoyed it. Once I welded at about a 590 heat setting in Pulse (76) mode on aluminum and it worked perfectly despite the high heat.

"I noticed and appreciate the quick thread tips. (You may want to advertise more about the contact tips your company makes and sells for aluminum or alloy 5356 -- especially the over-sized bore -- they work better and we normally use those in our aluminum applications).

"I like everything I have seen of the Panther™ gun construction, including the neck, the roller drive and even the transparent viewer cap. It's really a beautiful design and worthy of an award."

Go to the Panther™ page for general product information and details on the new Copper Plus™ contact tips.

How I Did It: Steering Wheel Stand
From: Kolby Doggins of Santaquin, Utah

Stand image

I have always enjoyed driving-type video games, but never found it fun using a steering wheel that's sitting on my lap.  I wanted something that would make it feel like I was driving a car so I designed this stand to hold the steering wheel and pedals.

I used my Lincoln Electric Weld-Pak® 3200HD MIG welder (current model is Weld-Pak® 140HD) and my Lincoln auto-darkening welding helmet to make the stand.  I used 1" tubing I had from another project and some sheet metal. I took some measurements of where I would like the pedals and the wheel, cut the material, welded it up and spray painted it.

The only complex part was the pedal mount.  I made it from a piece of sheet metal bent to a 90 degree angle and then made some cuts to bend it into a curve to fit the pedals.  I welded the cuts to form a nice u shape bend with flanges to hold the pedals in place.

I love every time I weld a project; I seem to get better and have more fun. I have had my Lincoln MIG welder for a few years and it has worked perfectly from the first time I welded with it.  Thanks to Weld-Pak®'s ease of use and reliability, welding together projects is as much fun as the video games I play with my new steering wheel stand!

Thank you Lincoln Electric for making such affordable and great quality products.

Look for our monthly iWeld:Project Focus e-mail starting the beginning of February.

The above project images and descriptions have been published to show how individuals used their ingenuity for their own needs, convenience and enjoyment. Only limited details are available and the projects have NOT been engineered by the Lincoln Electric® Company. Therefore, when you use the ideas for projects of your own, you must develop your own details and plans and the safety and performance of your work is your responsibility.
