Welding and Farming - The Two Go Hand-In-Hand
Welding and farming? They have more in common than you might think. In fact, one astute farmer noted, "you can't run a farm without welding." In this article, we will introduce you to some of the key concepts in welding and hardfacing. This knowledge should make it easier for you to keep your farm equipment in working order. Read article

Welding Consumables Meet the Buy America Requirements Made with Steel Melted in the United States
Lincoln Electric introduces Buy America welding consumables to meet the Buy America requirements for infrastructure rebuild projects related to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).
Buy America requirements are applicable to most ARRA funded projects and mandate that contractors involved in infrastructure rebuild must use welding consumables made with steel melted in the U.S.
Lincoln's Buy America consumables feature the same industry-leading performance as their standard counterparts but are manufactured using green rod melted in U.S. steel mills.
Buy America Products:
|
Stick Electrode – Excalibur® 7018 MR and 7018-1 MR |
|

Robotic Welding Increases Productivity in
Unlikely Applications
Crown Equipment of Greencastle, Indiana, manufactures electric lift trucks used to transport materials and goods in warehouses, distribution centers and manufacturing facilities worldwide. Nearly 92 percent of the truck parts are made on site, requiring more than 1,500 parts to be manually welded.
Challenge
|
1,500 individual parts per lift truck had to be welded in one of only nine welding stations. |
|
Increased downtime associated with changing welding procedures and fixtures for each part. |
|
Manual MIG and stick welding processes resulted in inconsistency and variable weld quality. |
Solution – Crown Chooses Lincoln
|
System 30 and 30HS Robotic Welding Cells. |
|
Power Wave® 455M power sources and SuperArc® L-56 MIG wire. |
Results
|
80% decrease in lift truck production time. |
|
More consistent welds of a higher quality - passing destructive testing after each run. |
|
Reduction in welding stations enabled the addition of a new production line and increased manufacturing capacity without adding more employees. |

How I Did It: Spartans From: Gregory Inman
I’ve been gas welding for quite awhile and about 8 years ago I wanted to build my own aerobatic airplane and decided to switch to TIG welding for its obvious benefits. I bought a Lincoln Precision TIG® 185 (current model is Precision TIG® 225) and proceeded to practice and hone my skills by making metal sculptures. I’ve created a variety of different figures, but the latest ones are representations of Spartans in battle dress.
The Spartan bodies are fabricated from aircraft quality thin-walled (.035) 4130 tubing of various diameters. The helmets are hand-shaped and welded 4130 steel sheet (.025), while the capes and shields are fiberglass. Since this is thin-walled tubing, a 1/16 inch tungsten electrode is all that’s needed and most of the welding is done at a low current setting of 40 amps. I also use gas lens CB’s to save on argon (shielding gas).
All the figures are done purely for fun and they are not for sale (I tell people it’s just an excuse to weld). More photos are posted on the website www.inmanflyingcircus.com.
These project images and descriptions have been published to show how individuals used their ingenuity for their own needs, convenience and enjoyment. Only limited details are available and the projects have NOT been engineered by the Lincoln Electric® Company. Therefore, when you use the ideas for projects of your own, you must develop your own details and plans and the safety and performance of your work is your responsibility.
